Reseller Spotlight:

Surfware, Inc. is proud to recognize Intelligent Choices, Authorized SURFCAM reseller in Argentina, for their hard work and dedication in promoting SURFCAM in this country. Intelligent Choices attained the highest overall sales for Latin America and earned the “Reseller of the Year” award for that region in 2011.

Mario J. Lovato, founder and president of Intelligent Choices, started using SURFCAM in 1991 when shortly after his metallurgic business, Ultra Press SA, began using CNC machines. Because of SURFCAM's ease-of-use, Lovato learned SURFCAM very quickly and found its functionality and benefits very beneficial for his business. A short time later, he was signed on to become the SURFCAM reseller in Argentina so he could share the ease-of-use and world-class quality of SURFCAM to other machine shops and schools in his territory. His success resulted in the company becoming one of the most highly recognized companies in the plastic and closure molding industry in Argentina.

In addition to supporting SURFCAM CAD/CAM Systems, Lovato has the responsibility to lead the non-profit foundation called "Creciendo con los Angeles” for autistic children. This foundation supports a medical center that helps patients aged 6-25 with pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs) on the autism spectrum and provides intensive and special education programs for these patients.

Lincoln Laser, located in Phoenix, Arizona, specializes in custom-built high precision laser systems, laser scanning systems and optical components. The company was founded in 1975 by David Lincoln and Randy Sherman with the goal to produce quality jigsaw puzzles using laser technology. That original idea eventually led to the creation of Lincoln's leading laser scanning equipment. Today Lincoln Laser is an engineering and manufacturing company and has been recognized by The Arizona Association of Industries as the Arizona Manufacturer of the Year for 2006 in the Small Business Category.

Today, Lincoln Laser is known for its highly customized electro-optic and electro-mechanical systems, used across a broad range of industries around the world. Examples of these customized systems include medical imaging devices (such as those used in mammography, retinal scanning, dermatology and ophthalmology), barcode scanners, warehouse inventory, precision photocopying/printing, postal equipment, and several inspection devices.

“For over a decade, SURFCAM has been a vital tool in Lincoln Laser’s versatility and on-time delivery commitments,” says Mark Caviness, CNC Programmer at Lincoln Laser. “Our engineering department designs the modeling assemblies and drawings in SolidWorks and create toolpaths in SURFCAM for our NC programs in the shop. SURFCAM seamlessly brings SolidWorks models into the work environment enabling our NC programmers to create machine code right away. This is a great time saver and it eliminates errors from re-drawing parts.

“Models are brought into SURFCAM ready for machining. Complex processes are made easy and kept organized by keeping each operation’s details on separate layers in SURFCAM,” says Caviness. "Since the laser's mirrors are rotary by nature, often times turning operations are performed first. Enabling the canned cycle feature in SURFCAM is a time saver at the machine if changes in stock sizes or changes are needed in the depth of cut. "Partoff" and "bar-feed" cycles are made easy by setting up Custom Templates in SURFCAM.

“SURFCAM is packed with time saving techniques,” says Caviness. “The parts imported into SURFCAM are ready to be machined. We are heavy 5-axis users and SURFCAM Verification has some great features and benefits for us. Just watching the verification of casting models in their fixturing is a great way to seek out obstacles and to optimize production runs.”

SURFCAM is also the major source for Manufacturing, Operations, and Tooling (MOT) documentation creation for Lincoln Laser. MOTs are done created in DWG format and have part geometries with exact dimensions and specifications that may not look like the final part print. “There are several process steps involved, and with SURFCAM detailing ‘stock on,’ the criteria is made much simpler and is very accurate. The Operations Set-Up Sheets are created with just a click of a mouse button, giving the operator all the information they need to get the machine tooled up and cutting parts right away,” explains Caviness.

“We have been using SURFCAM for a long time and plan to use it for many years to come. We would like to thank the SURFCAM team for their great work!”
